in terms of harmonics generated in alternator emf these r mostly produced because of non sinusoidal field flux waveform. In case the field flux waveform is completely sinusoidal there would be no harmonics

1) conversion of ac to dc (rectifier) in dc generator and from dc to ac (inverter) in dc motor

2) it also keeps the armature mmf wave stationary in space
