Technical application : a colleague of mine was telling me that he had to find a method in order to prioritize more than 200 innovating technical ideas / topics for a management decision ; I suggested to use the search keyword facility of Google in order to get feedbacks from the biggest population: ”every body browsing the web” !! .. The method was very simple:
- Step 1: determine for each topics, 3 relevant combinations of 2 or 3 words
- Step 2: use the Ad words application in order to select the best of these 3 combinations in terms of relevance and max search
- Step 3: compare each best combination between the 200 topics : the result is a proposal of priorities with a 12 months history giving the trend
This is theory, now let us take an example in the field of Website Marketing applied to this article: when i wrote this article, I needed to choose 4 keywords that will fit to this article and will have the best web visibility; my first choice was:
- google adwords
- relevant key words
- top key words
- engineering search
Let us go to Google Ad words keyword tool. You may have to get a Google account (easy : mail address & log in).
Select the languages of the key words and the countries you are targeting.
carefull, do select "all countries" instead of "France" !

Enter the different key words combinations; here : google adwords, relevant key words, top key words … .

Do not accept synonym neither suggestions (ideas for new keywords); Fill the captcha area.

Then click on keyword search and see what you get
- google adwords : 550000 search / month
- relevant key words : 880
- top key words : 18100

Select the function that shows “all columns”
By clicking on the title “global month search” you can thus sort the results
Select the synonym function & accept “ideas for new keywords”
Then click on Keywords idea second time with this interesting result (At the bottom of the page you can have lots of other proposals) and my interest was to prefer these 3 other keywords :
- keyword tool : 300000 search / month
- Search keyword : 300000
- Website marketing : 165000
These will be the relevant keywords that i selected for this article,
