HAI IAM VISSU,
IAM WORKING AS AN ELECTRICAL ENGINEER IN SPINNING MILL.
RECENTLY APSPDCL POWER BILLING ON KVAH INSTEAD OF KWH.
SO WE HAVE TO MAINTAIN PF 0.99 TO UNITY OR LEADING PF.
IF WE MAINTAIN LEADING POWER FACTOR , ANY DISADVANTAGES ARE THERE?
PLS LET ME KNOW.
2011/04/06 at 9:09 am #11932adminKeymastercapacitive property of ckt. will increase
2011/04/06 at 9:35 am #11933adminKeymasterdear mr vissu
HELLOO!!!!!!!!!
now you must be aware that maintaining unity p f is very advantages in many ways. if you are in some states like maharastra or gujrat you can avail an incentive of 7 % max instead of a penalty of 7 % on your running monthly bill. your supply/load needs to be studied like wise to design a suitable capacitive compensation. SO MANY MORE ADVANTAGES ARE ALSO THERE.

Yes! There are definite problems. Your EB or DISCOM calculates the monthly average power factor by the formula PF = kWh/kVAh. Please note that you do not gain any big advantage even with leading power factor. Because even with leading power factor the kVAh is going to be more and kWh less. SO, you will still have poor power factor and will be penalised. There could be other probelms such as voltage boost, etc. with leading PF

2011/05/07 at 8:44 pm #12073erickenchParticipant0.99 PF is a very good number.

as of now APSPDCL considers leading pf as unity power factor and therefore lead is advantageous. But if all the consumers do not switch off capacitors when load is not there merely to get tariff benefit then EB will introduce lead as lead metering in which case lead will pull down your pf similar to lag and kvah will be greater than kwh. 0.99 pf is quite good. Do not think of over compensation. Are your loads fixed or varying?

2011/05/23 at 1:17 pm #12093adminKeymasterIf you have pf 0.99 or more that is mean you are improve the main electric network , and the company of electruc should give you the bonus for that .
and you have also avery emportant advantage , your load Ampere ,ll be decrease that is mean you can add more load and that is mean also your panel and circuit braker ,ll be work at the good status >

Dear ;
Certainly, you will some advantages when the Power Factor will be high, but be carful, because if you have a capacitive PF, then it's possible that the level of voltage will be higher that will be danger for some sensitive equipments,so, for that reason the ideal value for PF is : 0.93-0.96 but not more, because if you try to achieve 0.99 then certainly during switching-off for 1 big step ( 50 or 60kVAR ) you will have a capacitive power factor.
Regards.

mr sonari gone through u r answer but not getting idea clearly i want to know in slip ring induction motor why they use resistive load to improve power factor why not capacitive one ?
also i want to ensure what are the advantages of leading and lagging power factor
