Introduction of Electrical energy efficiency in Low-Voltage electrical installations

Draft for a new IEC standard
At an hour when advices for energy efficiency are to be written, the challenge is to aim at completed general installations rules for electrical installations of buildings, in the way to obtain the highest possible service for the lowest energy consumption. This shall be true in new and also in existing buildings.

Cost efficient W.A.G.E.S management: is key !
(Water Air Gas Electricity Steam)

From my point of view, I think that is a major action in all Energy Efficiency programs.

If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it!

The first thing to do if we want to optimize the consumption of a building is to know, ie to measure and record in a database, all the consumptions for making analysis and having a clear vision on the division of consumptions in the building.

Buildings : invest in process rather than energy reduction

The increase in energy costs has raised awareness to all stakeholders of buildings that operating expenses could be a source of economy. If the approach has been taken into account in the design, it remains improvable  in the exploitation phase. It is necessary to consider the building as a process, analyze the flow and can be interesting to look at the  experience of manufacturers in order to copy their methods and analysis tools. We also call this field, Building Management System. We propose here to address the subject from this angle.

Information Technology and Communication = a lever for value creation in energy efficiency

BMS
BMS

Relevant information can be turned into action to improve energy performance and cost reductions associated.

  • Up to 30% reduction in consumption (and therefore costs and associated CO2 emission are accessible)
  • The building is one of the key targets: 40% of energy consumption
  • 2 degrees gap on the temperature (hot or cold) is 15% of consumption more or less
  • The indoor or outdoor lighting : 30% to 50% reduction can be obtained for same service level (lighting is an important item in the energy bill

Wasting our watts : article in TIME mag

“Wasting our watts. We don’t need new drilling or new power plants. We need to get efficient”

I advise you to read this paper about America’s Untapped Energy Resource: Boosting Efficiency

“A lot of simple answers are just sitting around waiting for us to execute”. Tom Reddoch, Electric Power Research Institute – EPRI.

This article is giving a good overview of the American situation: the stake is to get “the miracle juice” of what is called “” …. Two basic ways for that: using more efficient machinery & using machinery more efficiently.
