I have asked Mr B.Clavilier, Sales Director of SERVELEC panel builder, France, what he expects from his web site and what are the main changes in the lastest version. Find below his answer, and don’t hesitate to comment with your own experience !

In France the major panel builders have created a web site in the 10 past years; they are in general limited in content & functionalities.

The aim of these web site is to push information, about the products, the competencies and the organisation of the company. Sometimes they also have some links to professional events or some monthly generic information files, but indeed these sites propose very little interactivity with the users.

The main reason is the lack of resources available in these companies to manage their web site. But there’s also a reason directly linked with the image of the panelbuilder toward its customers and competitors:

The market does not expect much innovation from panelbuilder.

In general panel builder are more followers than leaders. Innovations mainly come from electrical products manufacturers because it’s what customers expect from them, and not from the panelbuilder.

That’s why it makes it difficult to bring innovation inside panel builder communication and web site.

However, despite this fact, as a panel builder, I can see some benefits today

Today I measured an additional flow of consultation of around 5 %. But more importantly, I noticed the jobs coming through the web site are much more attractive.

These jobs are non specific, complex and with some incertitude so it permits us to use all of our know-how and knowledge. Moreover, most of the time the customer who’s searching information and advice on the net, doesn’t really know how to express what they want, it’s allowing us to generate more added value in our response. Finally the web site gives us a potential direct contact with the end users, which is really important in our activity.

To boost it, we are going to improve mainly 2 features.

  • We have worked on : we choose and use on the web site the most appropriate keywords representing the specific know-how of our company and corresponding to a real need from customers; for example we could choose “draw out “which is one of our specific know-how in order to capture internet searches from Google; but we discovered that customers who need that kind of features are expert and do not need to search on Google; we finally choose another one.
  • We have opened a section on Services and maintenance: we present our catalogue on maintenance (preventive, predictive, thermal imaging) and Energy Efficiency, in cooperation or not with the major manufacturers to bring more added value to the end user

Hi Dan, the title of this blog is referring to panel builder web sites, I believe this to be in context of Panel Builders own web sites, I have a different proposal, on our site we have started to bring together all information that could be of use to ‘Panel Builders’ – ie. links to manufacturers CAD files, product directory, catalogues, news items and a Panel builder ezine/magazine. In fact we are finishing off the compilation of a list of training providers in this specific area.

We believe we are in a position to create a micro site just on Panel Building. My question is what is the type of information/content that an International audience would like to have on such a site.

        As stated in the above text we have some information on;

        CAD files
        Catalogues
        List of British Standards
        News
        Product training by manufacturer
        Magazine/ezine
Product database (still being added to monthly)

Please let us know what other information a Panel Builder Portal/web site should contain and we will gather such information and create this new site.

    good day Dan,
Seeing this blog was very refreshing and good, We ourselves are panel builder for Marine industry in India.I will be obliged if you can provide some technical assistance through this blog , hope to hear from you soon.

I have vast experience of dealing with LV panels in India and also for Marine..

In case you have not dealt with Marine market earlier let me inform you that among other technical things you also need to have approval from agencies like IRS , LRS etc. You must also decide in which arena you want to enter … Defence ships , commercial ships , freighters , yatchts etc..as this will decide the technical competancies…

In the UK we are attempting to bring all the information required by all industry sectors together under “one roof” and e-lec.org is the electrical industry portal, we have links to manufacturers CAD files, catalogues, price lists, software, British Standards etc. We have also created a magazine aimed at the Panel Builder. It is still very difficult for us to get Panel Builders to provide us with case studies etc. We are not a forum but provide links to forums for the benefit of our visitors. There is no cost at all involved in getting this information in front of the customer, so please provide us with the information and we will publish it.
