From several years now, we hear a lot on smartgrids. This is a very fashion word. Almost no product announcement can be done without mentioning smartgrids. If we look into details, it seems there is not so many differences between an existing product not claiming to be smartgrids ready and a new one.

I would like to be a little bit provocative.

Is smartgrids only bla bla bla or is there really something behind?

How to detect the real added value of smartgrids?

you can check Metrum produced according ti IEC 61000-4-30 where you can monitor consumption and other aspects. Actually it is most helpful in indsutrial installation. Other wise a net analysis mostly under normal operation is essential sometimes particulary to determine THD, PF, transients etc.
